Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is a great way to explore nature and stay fit. Whether you're paddling on a lake, river, or the ocean, choosing the right outfit will help you stay comfortable, protect your body from the elements, and fully enjoy your adventure.

Here are some useful clothing tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable SUP experience, no matter the season.

Cotton is not recommended for water activities. This fabric absorbs water quickly, takes a long time to dry, and becomes heavy when wet, making you uncomfortable. Instead, opt for clothing made from nylon or polyester, which wick moisture, dry quickly, and keep your body comfortable.

Sunlight doesn’t just come from above; it also reflects off the water, making sunburn more likely. Choose clothing with a high UPF rating (UPF 50+) to better protect your skin. These garments have been proven more effective than sunscreen and won’t wash off in the water.

Prioritize UPF sun protection clothing for SUP

Specialized fishing clothing not only provides sun protection but also has cooling and moisture-wicking properties, making it an excellent choice for SUP in hot weather.

In hot weather, prioritize lightweight, breathable clothing that also protects your skin from the sun.

  • Effective sun protection: High-UPF clothing helps shield your skin from UV rays.
  • Stay cool all day: Cooling technologies like Omni-Freeze Zero™ will keep you comfortable while paddling in the heat.

In cold weather, layering your clothing helps retain warmth while allowing easy temperature adjustments when needed.

  • Layering allows you to adjust your body temperature as the weather changes.
  • Always carry a windproof jacket to prevent chills in strong winds.

You can paddleboard barefoot, but water shoes provide better protection against sharp rocks and reduce the risk of slipping.
  • Water shoes: Quick-drying, lightweight, and slip-resistant
  • Fishing shoes: High grip, non-slip
  • Flip-flops: Usable, but they may float away if not secured

If the water temperature is below 15°C, consider wearing a wetsuit to stay warm. However, wetsuits are designed to retain heat while submerged, so they may make you feel colder if paddling in windy conditions.

  • Short wetsuit (Spring suit): Suitable for water temperatures of 15-21°C
  • Full wetsuit (3/2mm or 4/3mm): Suitable for water below 15°C

For a comfortable and safe trip, don’t forget to bring these essential items:

  • Spare dry clothes: Change after paddling to prevent catching a cold.
  • Polarized sunglasses: Reduce glare from the water and protect your eyes.
  • Sun hat: Shields your face and neck from UV rays.
  • Water bottle: Stay hydrated throughout your journey.
  • Waterproof backpack: Protects your phone, wallet, and keys from getting wet.
  • Sunscreen: Apply to areas not covered by UPF clothing.

Whether you're paddleboarding for relaxation, exploration, or fitness, choosing the right clothing will ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Prepare well and make the most of your time on the water!
